Brazil the favorite in Jakarta, says ACNielsen

Germany has a strong following in Jakarta while youngsters more pro the Italian team

Men and women in Jakarta are cheering for Brazil to win the FIFA World Cup once again this year, according to a recent survey by ACNielsen, the world’s leading market research and information company. The survey was conducted in Jakarta where 300 respondents were polled which team they wanted to be the winner of this year’s World Cup most and who they rated as their favorite player in the tournament.

“Overall, Brazil is a clear emotional favorite to win this year’s World Cup with 42 percent hoping the team will win, followed by Germany (25%) and England (11%)” commented Mrs. Catherine Eddy, Executive Director of ACNielsen, Indonesia. A recent ACNielsen survey in China also saw Brazil ranked top (followed by Germany and Argentina). In Jakarta though, there is a significant distinction between men’s choice for the winner and that of women. 

The women are more closely divided than men between the two main teams they want to see win; namely Brazil (39%) and Germany (30%).  “It’s likely that their choice of the latter is related to Germany’s home court advantage,” said Mrs. Eddy.  Brazil is the overwhelming choice among men as the champion of the 2006 FIFA World Cup with 45 percent pinning their hopes on Brazil. This is a sentiment echoed across the world due to the high levels of empathy with this team and no doubt, their huge success at the game.  Fewer males (19%) favour Germany than females (30%).

 Surprisingly some prominent teams did not garner much support as one would have thought. Only 8 percent of respondents give their winning vote to Argentina and Italy while a diminutive 2 percent stated their desire for France to win. “The big support for England comes from women (16% vs. males 7%), perhaps spurred by their love for the team’s captain, David Beckham,” said Mrs. Eddy. Germany gathers much of its support from the 40-49 year olds.  Younger respondents aged 20-24 show high hopes of Italy winning this year (22% compared with an overall 8%), many of whom also name Zinedine Zidane as their favorite player (13% compared with an overall 2%).

Among all the players currently participating in the World Cup, there are three who stand out as favorites in Jakarta. Ronaldo is the primary choice followed closely by Beckham and Ronaldinho. Beckham’s biggest fan base expectedly comes from Jakartan women.  More than a third (37%) of the ACNielsen survey’s female respondents named Beckham as their favourite player.  “And perhaps there is a little jealousy among the men because the survey found that just 12 percent of male respondents gave Beckham the thumbs up as their favorite,” said Mrs. Eddy.  Men tended to favour more strongly Ronaldo (24%) and Ronaldinho (23%) as their players of choice. 

 About the Survey
The ACNielsen Football Survey took place on June 10-12, 2006. The survey was polled in Jakarta and involved 300 respondents.  The 95% confidence interval for this sample is between +/-1.4% and +/- 5.7% depending on the proportion reported.  Only statistically significant results (those that fall out of these ranges) are noted in this press release.
